Hello, I'm Hidenori Watanave,
media artist and chief director of Photon, Inc. from Japan.
We opened the official site of a "communication tool beyond the space-time". Through the RhythmEngine, we suggest, "the session, which is inherited from the past to the future using place as an agent" and "music and image communication, which has rich emotion" to the Web-world.

Welcome Hidenori, where did the inspiration come from to start with the RhythmEngine project?

Hidenori
First, we started from research of the correlation nature of sound and colors. However, it is a very much difficult theme, and we could not but give up. Next, we paid our attention to BBS used for the system of a session. An interesting phenomenon comes to occur only by raising one dimension of the system of ordinary BBS. Now, "Search action for a partner" is in not player's mind, but in real operating the character on a screen! And in order for us to tell the feelings to a player, not text but the information on visual and sound was required.

How long have you been working on this project?

Planning...Sep.2001 - Mar.2002 Computer Work...Nov.2001 - Mar.2002 You may think that this is short.:) However, we were able to finish it at early speed by accumulation of an old experience etc.

The RhythmEngine site has been selected for the Ars Electronica 2002 contest in Austria later this year. That is very good news. How are your chances to win? Have you already seen the work of other contributors?

Hidenori
Ah, I am sorry, we may have given you misapprehension. I wanted to tell in a sentence that we are sending. We were selected by examination of jury of WEB GRAPHICS category of SIGGRAPH, and it determined to perform presentation in July, just yesterday. We're very happy now. But The examination result of PRIX ARS ELECTRONICA has not come out yet.

I have been reading you are a lecturer at the Kyoto Univ.of Art and Design and the Asagaya college of Art and Design. About what kind of subjects are you lecturing here?

Hidenori
In Kyoto Univ.of Art and Design, I'm lecturing "Digital Design of Architecture" by tool of Internet and CAD. In Asagaya Collage of Art and Design, I'm lecturing "Media theory" and "Digital Media Design -- CommunicationEntertainment". I am having a class by the theme of thinking about [sharing of consciousness] from both the real-body and cyber-body in the network.

We are looking with big eyes at the i-Mode developments in Japan. Spring 2002 KPN Mobile is introducing the i-Mode in Europe in cooperation with NTT Docomo from Japan. What do you think about all these technological developments?

Hidenori
I think that a "mobile-phone with location determination system" bears the core of such a movement. I have heard that the online network game which harnessed the performance of a GPS cellular phone is actually prosperous in Europe. I consider that human is the living thing which holds concern strong against the geographical feature in consciousness rather than actual geographical feature. A cellular phone should become a tool for actualizing such "geographical feature in consciousness."

What do you think about our future?

Hidenori
Human beings will think [the space in consciousness(augumented by the network tool)] as important as [the material space], and will consider "the past space-time" and "the future space-time" equivalent, and melt boundary line of others' consciousness and self consciousness.
