The Grand Amethyst Genesis

A unique creation of the master jeweler and silversmith Gianmaria Buccellati. Without regard for rules of fashion or the market, this genius of the new millennium has decided to present at Maastricht an object that perfectly fuses the creativity and inspiration that he has always endeavored to express through his work. Gianmaria Buccellati describes the intellectual and emotional process that brought him to the conception of the Grand Amethyst Genesis.

“For some time, I have had the idea of creating a sculptural representation of Paradise on earth, which has been depicted many times during the history of art by great painters from the Gothic through the Renaissance periods. Yet this subject had never been conceived in a three dimensional, sculptural form. When I had the fortune of finding this unusual amethyst, I thought of realizing this vision and immediately set to work. It took 5 years to complete, adjusting the effects and dimensions until finally achieving the result I was searching for”.

“The artistic technique employed, eloquently mirrors the symbolic force of this biblical scene. Adam and Eve, as well as the serpent with the female face, were created in gold, utilizing the cera persa (lost wax) technique. These three subjects are specially portrayed in the scene by their unique color contrasting with the amethyst crystal backdrop, reflecting their central position in the universe. The tree is similarly conceived in cera persa whereas the fruit of temptation are red-gold gilded, to stand out from the leaves of the tree. The Grand amethyst is encircled by the animals of the earth, sky and sea. I wanted to depict them as being at once both attracted and sobered before the scene of divine disobedience, yet still in a peaceful and harmonious co-existence.”

“To create this sculpture, I utilized every possible technique in silver making, including a pelo (furry), which I introduced to the craft several decades ago. I am delighted with both the artistic realization and the execution of this work. I think it may best belong in a museum as curators and benefactors alike will recognize its absolute uniqueness”.

With these words, Gianmaria Buccellati recounts the progression of an artistic inspiration from its inception before the basic material. An amethyst that recounts an image of earthy paradise and perhaps the work that uniquely exemplifies the creative genius of the master Milanese artist. Admirers of this work will be transported into a scene blending the three elements sustaining life: air, water and earth. Fauna and flora are integral to the work as they always change human destiny. Thesis and antithesis live together in this work: the birth of a new world and the condemnation of humanity ,the beginning and the end, innocence and sin, beauty and danger.
