Si SposaItalia Collezioni closes with Positive Results
The revival of the bridalwear sector speaks a foreign language, with a +6.5% increase in foreign attendance.

Milan, June, 2007 – A total of 5,700 buyers (of which 35% were foreign) viewed the 170+ collections of bridalwear and men’s formalwear at Sposaitalia Collezioni, the exhibition organized by Expocts, a company of Fiera Milano Group, from June 22 to 25 in Fieramilanocity. Thanks to the successful event, the image of the sector has restored its luster after a brief downturn.

In 2006, in Italy, the wedding industry produced an overall turnover of 299 million euros, which almost matches the 2000 turnover that was around 300 million euros. Currently, exports remain stable and hold a share equal to 14.6 million euros.
Also contributing to the positive trend is the arrival of new markets, which is the result of the promotional activities abroad, which were many and carefully planned in the 2007 edition.
Results are evident in the number of foreign buyers that arrived in Milan for the four-day event devoted to the wedding industry.
New market outlets are in Eastern Europe, with Russia, Poland, Rumania and the former Yugoslavian republics. Exports have also grown in the Far East, with Japan and South Korea heading the list. Holding a double ceremony has become a custom in these countries, with a traditional local ceremony and another western-style ceremony with the white wedding dress and all related elements such as invitations, wedding favors, etc. Significant growth has also been registered in consolidated markets such as the United States and Canada.

According to an Istat survey made in 2005, nearly 250,000 weddings took place in Italy (civil and religious). This difference in type of ceremony hardly affects bridalwear production and sale, because the traditional white gown is chosen for both.
According to comments by major producers, another interesting statistic emerges regarding second weddings: the gown chosen for the second wedding is often more ornate and precious than the first. This may be due to past experience that prevents the bride from making mistakes made when she bought her first gown.

Moreover, although the number of weddings has declined, the ability and desire to spend has not:
both bride and groom still buy the outfit of their dreams and spend approximately 2,500 euros on their outfit alone.
Recognizing this trend and the potential of the sector, major designers have begun investing in bridalwear lines.
