TEFAF SHOWCASE – A new initiative to promote talented young dealers

The pre-eminence of The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) Maastricht among international art fairs has led to a long waiting list for potential exhibitors and it is particularly difficult for younger dealers to get the opportunity to take part.

Ben Janssens, TEFAF’s new chairman, is keen to change this and so the Fair’s Board of Trustees has agreed to create TEFAF Showcase in 2008 to give recently established galleries the chance to participate on a strictly one-off basis. The aim of TEFAF Showcase is to give younger dealers the invaluable experience of being part of a major international fine art event, and at the same time give TEFAF’s visitors and existing participants an impression of some of the most exciting emerging galleries and dealers today.

TEFAF Showcase exhibitors will have a special pavilion with uniformly designed small units created by the Amsterdam-based architect Tom Postma. Dealers representing the variety of disciplines at the Fair, including antiques and works of art, paintings, drawings and prints, antiquities, jewellery and modern and contemporary art, will be selected.

The criteria for selection are:
1 – The gallery or dealer should be operating at the highest level in their field.
2 – The gallery or dealer should have an international standing.
3 – The gallery or dealer must have been in business for at least three and no more than ten years.

A committee composed of TEFAF members and independent art specialists will be appointed to select between five and ten suitable applicants. All works of art to be exhibited will be pre-vetted. Applications should be sent to The European Fine Art Foundation before 1 October 2007.

The selected galleries will only be required to pay a fixed rate of € 5,000 for their unit, including stand building and promotion. The entrance fee for participation will be waived by TEFAF. Participation in TEFAF Showcase is for one year only and offers no guarantee whatsoever of participation in subsequent years.
