Antiquaris Barcelona creates new initiatives directed at quality of exhibits and new trends
The prestigious Caylus gallery will be the show’s guest of honour
Jan 14, 2008 - The next Antiquaris Barcelona will present the “Special Guest” project, through which two internationally prestigious exhibitors will participate in the show. In addition to this initiative, which will consolidate the traditional content of the show, other activities will integrate new market trends and propose the fusion of contemporary spaces with antiques. There will also be a change in the venue of the show, which will be held hall 1 of the Montjuïc exhibition centre, from the 29th of March to 6th of April.
Organised by Fira de Barcelona, Antiquaris Barcelona will feature a select range of antiques, paintings, sculpture, furniture and decorative arts, ethnic art, archaeology and collector’s pieces from some of the best antiquarians and galleries of Spain and Europe.
The major new feature of the 32nd edition will be the “Special Guest” initiative, through which two internationally prestigious exhibitors, one national and another international, will be guests of honour. For the moment, the organisers have received confirmation of the presence of the Madrid gallery Caylus, specialised in antique painting and considered one of the best in Spain and Europe. This gallery, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, was founded by Enrique Gutiérrez de Calderón, José Antonio de Urbina and Peter Glidewell. Last year, they organised the exhibition “A century of Caylus”, featuring Spanish and Italian painting from the 18th century with works by Madrazo, Bayeu, Mengs and Goya, with the first time showing of "Escena de la escuela" (School scene) by the latter.
Bringing the world of antiques to new audiences
After last year’s success, Antiquaris will bring back “Flashback”, an exercise in integrating antiques in contemporary settings. The exhibition, organised in collaboration with the interior design shop Mínim, aims to attract young collectors in search of quality antiques to decorate contemporary spaces. “Flashback” will be organised prior to the show, in February.
Along these avant-garde lines, Antiquaris is organising Nova, a selection of pieces priced at less than 2,000 euros, with the aim of introducing new buyers in the world of antiques. For the fourth year running, the show is also organising visits of the show guided by experts.
The show will again feature activities which enjoyed much success in previous years. For the second year, the Asociación del Estudio del Mueble (Association of Furniture Study) will organise a seminar on “18th century furniture: new study contributions”. Another space is the “Village”, an elegant setting created by select brands from various business sectors where visitors and exhibitors can meet in comfort. The show will again be inaugurated with the classic Vernissage, an exclusive social event which will be attended by some 2,000 personalities from the business, social and cultural, worlds.
The show is changing venue and will be held un hall 1 of the Montjuïc exhibition centre, which can be accessed directly from Plaza España. Last year’s edition received over 23,000 visitors, mainly collectors, restorers, antiquarians, interior designers and decorators, art professionals, executives from cultural and financial bodies, buyers and art enthusiasts.
