GRAND FINALE


KUALA LUMPUR, 27 November 2006 – The most anticipated local fashion event, the Malaysia-International Fashion Week (M-IFW) ended with a bang last Sunday, 26 November 2006 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre as they paid tribute to Malaysian crafts and honoured young talents in the fashion industry.


The gala night showcased over 80 outfits consisting of the best textiles from Malaysia including batik, tenun and songket by two Kraftangan Malaysia designers; En Nazari Maarus and Puan Hajjah Rodziah Mohd Yusof.

Present that night was Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Y.B. Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim and KDYTM Tengku Puan Pahang Tunku Hajjah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah binti Almutawakkil Allah Sultan Iskandar, DK., DK (Johor). Also present at the event was Director General Kraftangan Malaysia, Tuan Haji Abdullah Haji Ab Rahman and Chairman of Kraftangan Malaysia YBhg Datuk Siti Azizah Abod.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Lifetime Achievement Award to Dato’ Prof. Jimmy Choo, OBE, who was chosen as the recipient of the award because of his worldwide success in becoming a household name as well as giving Malaysia recognition through his internationally renowned shoemaking craft. In honour of his success, Corum Swiss Timepieces presented him with a Corum Classical Grande Date timepiece with the Lifetime Achievement Award certificate from M-IFA.

There was also a charity auction where Dato’ Bernard Chandran graciously donated a yellow with silk leopard lining, trench coat from his latest Spring / Summer Collection 2007. The piece was especially special as it was made from kain tenun Pahang, and was inline of the theme for the night. Sold at RM10,000.00 to the highest bigger of the night, Ms Nancy Yeoh, the President and CEO of M-IFA.

As the final event of M-IFW 2006, upcoming young designers, who were nominated in the ‘MIFA 2006 Upcoming Designer Category’, were also given the opportunity to shine through their catwalk show themed- Romanticism. The nominees were; Edmund Ooi Kee Seong (Raffles Design Institute), Jerome Ang (Uni of Santo Tomas), Dolo Peh Hong Leong, Tee Waee Waee (Institute of Marangani, Italy), Kaxt Chong Yip Seong (MIA), Oke Teng Chee Sing, Daryl Yip Lee Fei (LUCT) and Chris C. Diaz (Philippine School of Int. Design). (Please find attachment for list of winners and prizes).

More than 60 local designers and fashion labels alongside 20 international luxury brands that included watches, shoes and handbags showcased more than 1,000 pieces of new creations at M-IFW 2006. Following in the tradition of the past fashion weeks (KLAFW), organizer MIFA aimed to create a bustling and diverse local fashion scene with the inclusion of international brands. The four day event was a big hit among fashion aficionados and industry professionals with more than 12, 000 visitors consisting of trade visitors, international and local media, as well as fashion enthusiast.

The M-IFW 06 showcased the newest in prêt-a-porter and haute couture (high fashion) collections following the theme of Trend Asia 2007, conceptualised to showcase ‘”NEXT” Asian Trends and fashion articulation from Malaysia’s well established fashion leaders, with the vision and aim of positioning Kuala Lumpur as the Fashion Hub of Asia.
