Manish Malhotra brings Bollywood glamour to LFW
Mumbai, March 28, 2006: The final show by Manish Malhotra on day one of the Lakme Fashion Week was like a Bollywood extravaganza complete with Karan Johar as MC and a large dose of silver screen celebrities in the audience cheering their favourite designer. Manish's favourites Kajol and Preity Zinta walked the ramp and the evening was a roaring success.
Titled Freedom, Manish's all white collection with smatterings of navy, black and gold was inspired by Sufism a theme that proved that the designer had matured into a classic creator in the five years that he has been in the business.
Sticking to what he does best - Manish Malhotra presented a collection of saris, ghagra cholis, and kurta churidars with crochet, net, georgette and silk. Lace and crochet appeared on edges or as parts of garments or in their complete forms. Embellishments were restricted to crochet appliqués, pear/crystal embroidery or gold print.
Lowering the hemline of the kurta to almost ankle length Manish bid good bye to the kurti. Layering played an important part for kurtas, ghagras and at times even the pre-stitched saris. Avoiding footwear, models wore crochet booties. While churidars were skin tight in net or lace, Manish teamed the Mughal inspired kurtas with slim 'ijars'.
Men's wear comprised a few black and white shirts with crochet appliqués, sherwanis and kurtas and some dramatic dupattas.
Most of the garments were striking pieces but a white pin tuck silk over jacket worn over a black ornate corset was stunning and the saris were all glamorous draped and blended together in different fabrics.
There is no doubt that when it comes to drama and glamour in fashion Manish Malhotra is the Master of the Art. |
