Bangkok Fashion Week ’06 shapes rhythm of fashion in global markets

BFW’06 will take place over five days at the Queen Sirikit Convention Centre and include textile and garment, jewellery and leatherwear trade shows, talks from industry professionals, a gala evening, a showcase of recent design school graduates, as well as the traditional catwalk style shows.
The event organisers hope to strengthen Thailand’s position as a regional fashion hub. Over 40 Thai brands will showcase new collections.
According to Pramode Vidtayasuk, project director for the Bangkok Fashion City, a leading objective of Bangkok Fashion Week ‘06 is to foster talent within Thailand’s fashion industry.
He said, “We want to elevate Thai brands and become more internationally recognisable. Thai designers now have the capacity to achieve the global presence. BFW’06 will be a great opportunity to showcase our talented designers in a Thai arena.”
The event also aims to stimulate business across the textile, garment, gem, jewellery, shoes, and leather industries. The focus is on improving product quality and design in order to increase global recognition and achieve a competitive advantage.
“Since last year, we’ve really gained momentum and have been able to position ourselves as an international and noteworthy event. Bangkok Fashion Week ‘05 attracted more than 70,000 visitors over a five-day event. This included more than 300 international buyers,” said Pramode.
“Last year’s debut of Bangkok Fashion Week has created a driving force for the Thai fashion industry to grow and achieve the same global presence as European and American designers. It was our first try, though, providing the industry with prospects,” noted Kriengsak Tantiphipop, Head of Bangkok Fashion Week Project Committee.
“The first event opened a wider world for Thai designers. To date many local brands such as Senada Theory, Tube Gallery, Sretsis, Fly Now, Grey by Greyhound and Head Quarters have been recognised by international fashion communities,” said Ponlawat Sukjarus, executive producer of AV Projects Co., Ltd., which is the event organizer.
“This year’s event is designed to be a fashion festival able to captivate the audient. We want to attract both local and international members of the fashion community, as well as buyers and media.” He added.
The five day event comprises of six main activities:
The Catwalk Shows, run daily from March 15-19, and include over 40 Thai designers.
There are two Catwalk Show locations. The Catwalk Shows at the Fashion Dome, a majestic air dome constructed over the middle of the lake at Benjakitti Park, next to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). The other is ‘Super’ Catwalk, a special catwalk constructed in the QSNCC Plenary Hall displaying the collections of prominent Thai designers.
The Trade Fair will include industry professionals from the textile and garment, jewellery and accessory, and leather and footwear sectors.
The Designer Showcase aims to highlight Thai creative talents among the trade industries.
Graduate Fashion Week will feature over 80 works from design students representing 30 local universities and institutes. The week will conclude with an award ceremony on March 19.
Fashion Talk will offer an opportunity for the fashion community to meet local and international fashion professionals. Topics include merchandising management, product development, and trend analysis.
