Award of the German Apparel Industry Foundation 2007

European design competition on the subject “The Fine Art of
Travelling” has been expanded

The 2007 Award of the Stiftung Deutsche Bekleidungsindustrie (German Apparel Industry Foundation) on the subject “The Fine Art of Travelling” has been extended. To supplement the fashion designs for the main award, designs for stylish and functional items of luggage are now being sought too.
The Special Prize for Luggage is offered in cooperation with the baggage manufacturer Tumi and is endowed with a total sum of EUR 3,500 as well as six months of paid practical training at the headquarters of the company in New York/New Jersey.
The Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie was created by fashion entrepreneur Klaus Steilmann in 1977. The aim of the foundation is to promote up-and-coming designers in a pioneering way.

“The Fine Art of Travelling” is the subject of the Award of the Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie in 2007. Whether it’s for a business trip or a sporting holiday, in first class or economy, what they are seeking is fashions that meet the varied requirements of travellers. As suitable items of luggage greatly contribute to the art of travelling, Tumi – the leading American brand for high-quality baggage for travellers and professionals – is donating the Special Prize for Luggage.

The task is to design stylish and functional luggage that meets the varied requirements made on contemporary baggage. For instance, how can you go on a week’s business trip and only fly with hand luggage? Or what sort of baggage is useful for a bike tour of frozen Lake Baikal? Do you always need a complete arsenal of cases and bags or are there modules that can be combined into one piece of luggage when required?

“We are asking and hoping for innovative designs from creative young people and we would be pleased to include these in the development of new products from Tumi – at the usual market conditions and observing copyright and rights of use”, explains Timm Fenton, Vice President
Design, Tumi.

The competition has been announced throughout Europe and is aimed at especially talented design students in all creative disciplines. The application deadline for free participation is 8 December 2006. From the work submitted, a jury of internationally experienced experts from design, the retail trade, marketing and the media selects the award-winners according to established criteria. Altogether, the prizes include cash to the sum of EUR 14,000, six-month courses of paid practical training at Akris (St. Gallen), Mover Sportswear (Lausanne), Quiksilver/Roxy (Biarritz), Interbrand Zintzmeyer & Lux (Zürich) and Tumi (New York/New Jersey) as well as ten vouchers for EUR 750 for material from Swiss Textiles.

The award-winning submissions will be presented and exhibited to the international fashion trade and the media on 4 - 7 February 2007 at ispovision winter 07, International Trade Show for Premium Sportstyle – Fashion inspired by Sports. You will find full details of the competition as well as the application documents at www.stiftung-bekleidungsindustrie.de
