About Nataliya Dolenko

I was born in Kiev, Ukraine and have been interested in designing and making my clothes from the early age. At the age of fifteen I have started doing modelling both in Kiev and Moscow, which I was continuing for seven years. During this time I have acquired an Engineering Degree at National Technical University of Ukraine.

Since the legal regulations on getting a student status in UK has been simplified for non-EU citizens, I have seen my dream of studying at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design more realistic. In 2001 I moved to London to study BA Degree at Fashion Design there. In 2002 I was assisting with the design and production for the designers at London Fashion Week as well as for renowned House of Aquascutum.

I have been working at Alexander McQueen Studio as a pattern cutting assistant on two collections: S/S 07 and S/S 08 as well as on the private orders. Also I was working with Hussein Chalayan on his renowned ‘Airborne’ A/W 07 Collection, which featured movie dresses: the dresses consisted of 15,600 LEDS, programmed in the way, that the images on those dresses where displaying a video without been connected to a computer. The project, I was assisting with, was lead by the unique designer and engineer, Moritz Waldemeyer.

In 2008, after my return form Switzerland, where I was living for a few months, I was invited to participate to Fashion TV young designer’s competition. This leaded me to create my first collection, which was presented on Budapest and Bahrain Fashion Weeks in 2008 and in Dubai (Creations) Fashion Week on the beginning of this year.

In February 2009 I have presented off schedule my Autumn/Winter 09’10 Collection, ‘Sublimation’ at London Fashion Week. I was invited to show this collection in Ukrainian Fashion Week, this March. This week, April 2009, I have a show on Budapest Fashion Week.

Are you, as a fashion designer and producer, confronted with ethical issues such as environmentally friendly production, the use of organic cotton and organic materials, the use of fur, labour rights in developing countries, and how do you deal with them?

© Nataliya DolenkoExploration of new ideas, methods and shapes. I’m aiming to express my feelings and visions via the clothes I design. For example, the meditational Art of Tibetan Buddhists and their Mandala images and practices have inspired my current Collection. The technical task was to create such garments, which would be changing the shapes during the movement of the body as our thoughts and feelings are changing with the time and evaluation of our experiences.

I’m trying to maintain the exclusiveness, high quality of both design and making. Therefore, the production is kept in Europe under my constant supervision. With my designs I want to deliver the positive energy and I look at the body as a material cover to the soul, and the designs I make, I aiming to find the integrity between the dressed body and our sublime I.

Under no circumstances, considering the tasks I put for myself and explained above, I would be using the fur, which is the product of harming some one’s life. I’m constantly keeping my eye on the development of fabrics and production technologies, and whatever I find is suitable I would be incorporating with my designs.
