7 festival for fashion & photography
Unit F büro für mode always strikes off down new avenues with its yearly festival, presenting fashion as the expression of a modern lifestyle and of an ideology that provides the spark for the latest trends. With shows, exhibitions and lectures, Unit F presents the many facets of fashion.
For the first time this year, the educational sector will be highlighted at the festival with a showcase of final exam projects created by the fashion class at Vienna’s University of Applied Arts. The university will act as independent organizer, putting on its “Show Angewandte 2007” featuring the works of the next generation of designers in Hall E of the Vienna Stadthalle during the 7 festival.
Fashion and trends can be generated in a wide variety of ways, with fashion photography always playing a key role. This leading medium in our new communication society is increasingly dominating the visual world around us, developing into a powerful pool of ideas for pop culture, fashion and design. To provide a forum for the domestic fashion photography scene and pay tribute to its achievements, Römerquelle has introduced an Editorial Award for Fashion Photography, with award money of EUR 4,000 and an exhibition and publication opportunity (www.editorialaward.com).
Based on the resounding success of the lecture series at the 6 festival (M/M Paris, Marina Faust), Unit F will hold more lectures this year, further enhancing its profile on the fashion scene. The talks with interesting creative talents from the fields of fashion design, styling, photography, film and graphic design will take place at the Kunsthalle project space.
Other important impulses at the festival will be provided by the Fashion Award of the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture (consisting of a one-year foreign fellowship/worth up to EUR 18,000), the Fashion Award of the City of Vienna (trade show/festival participation/worth EUR 10,000) and the “Die Presse” Award for International PR (placement with an international press agency/worth EUR 15,000). These prizes, which will recognize for the seventh year in a row outstanding works by young Austrian fashion designers, have established themselves as true motors for innovation.
The initiatives launched by Pierre Lang and Erste Bank, two visionary private-sector enterprises, give young designers an opportunity to present their works to the public.
so fresh, the jewellery award by Pierre Lang (award money: EUR 10,000) debuted in 2006 with the goal of attracting more public attention to innovative jewellery design and the current state of contemporary jewellery creation (www.pierrelang.com/sofresh).
Kontakt. Fashion Award by Erste Bank (award money: EUR 4,000) – also presented for the first time in 2006 – honors an outstanding fashion collection by a designer from Central or Eastern Europe (http://kontakt.erstegroup.net).
The collections winning the Austrian fashion awards, along with contemporary Austrian design labels supported by departure - wirtschaft, kunst und kultur gmbh as part of the “Impulse Program for Creative Industries of the City of Vienna” will be presented on 22 June at the Awards 07 & Departure Fashion Night.
Following Wendy&Jim and Petar Petrov in previous years, the UO Collection for 2007 will be designed by Peter Pilotto from Tyrol, who trained in Antwerp and today lives and works in London. He and three designer friends will present their collections together at UO Fashion Night on Saturday, 23 June. This event will then culminate in the legendary UO Fashion Party.
This year, Maybelline Jade will come on board as new festival partner. Thanks to the collaboration with this internationally renowned cosmetics manufacturer, the areas of beauty and make-up can finally be integrated more consistently in the festival. One result of the partnership will be evident in the festival campaign, to be launched in May.
